Samsung announced the S24 series during the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event on January 17th (a few weeks earlier than when they announced the S23 series on February 1st, 2023).

Some specification differences versus the S23 series include changes to the display sizes and backplanes. The S24 has a 6.16” display size versus 6.06” for the S23. The S24+ has a display size of 6.66” versus 6.55” for the S23+. The S24 Ultra has a display size of 6.79” versus 6.81” for the S23 Ultra. All S24 models have an LTPO backplane for 1Hz – 120Hz variable refresh rate. The S23 and S23+ have an LTPS backplane that supports a 48Hz – 120Hz variable refresh rate.

The peak outdoor brightness for all models has increased to 2,600 nits versus 1,750 nits for the S23 series. All S24 models use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset. The S24 Ultra has a titanium finish and new Corning cover glass that is named Corning Gorilla Armor. Corning stated that this cover glass reduces reflection by up to 75% and is 4x more scratch resistant. The S24+ and S24 Ultra have a resolution of 3120 x 1440, versus a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and 3088 x 1440 for the S23+ and S23 Ultra, respectively.

The battery capacities have increased for the S24 and S24+ to 4,000 mAh and 4,900 mAh. The S23 and S23+ have battery capacities of 3,900 mAh and 4,700 mAh, respectively. The battery capacity for the S24 Ultra remained the same at 5,000 mAh.

As we show in the Monthly Flagship Smartphone Tracker, the S24 series panel shipment estimates through February 2024 are tracking 13% higher than the S23 series. The S24 Ultra is expected to have a 50% share in February with a cumulative share of 48%. The S24 is expected to have a 30% share in February with a cumulative share of 31%.

On a smartphone shipment basis, the S24 series is tracking 15% higher than the S23 series through March.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for Galaxy improves CPU performance by 20%, NPU performance by 41% and GPU performance by 30%. Prior to the event, Qualcomm issued a press release noting, “We’re proud to continue working alongside Samsung to lead this new era for the mobile industry and provide consumers with extraordinary premium experiences. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy instills its advanced AI capabilities in the Galaxy S24 series, to enable new experiences with AI features to empower users’ everyday life. It also fuels advanced professional-quality camera, gaming experiences and ultra-fast connectivity including Wi-Fi 71, plus offers one of the most reliable authentication solutions available with our Qualcomm® 3D Sonic Gen 2 technology."

TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics noted, “The Galaxy S24 series transforms our connection with the world and ignites the next decade of mobile innovation. Galaxy AI is built on our innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones. We’re excited to see how our users around the world empower their everyday lives with Galaxy AI to open up new possibilities.”

During the event, Samsung highlighted many of the AI features that are enabled by on-device and cloud based generative AI, which Samsung calls Galaxy AI. Most on-device direct translating is handled on the device itself. Edit Suggestions within the Gallery are also handled on-device. Most other features requiring a network connection utilize the cloud in some way.

Some of the new AI features shown during the event include:

  • Live Translate: The ability to have two-way real time translations of phone calls and text messages. The first languages supported will be Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Thai, Spanish and Vietnamese.
  • Circle to Search: The user can now circle or scribble an object within a social media post and the S24 series will overlay search results of that item on the social media post.
  • Chat and Note Assist: Get real-time tone suggestions to make your writing sound more professional or conversational. Note Assist makes a long story short. Simply start writing and AI formats your notes into a clear, easy-to-review summary.

As part of the performance improvements to the S24 series, Samsung noted that the S23 Ultra provides up to 30 hours of video playback, which is a 15% improvement over the S23 Ultra. For the S24, the specification notes 29 hours of video playback, which is a 32% improvement over the S23. For the S24+, the specification notes 31 hours of video playback which is a 15% improvement over the S23+. The batteries for the S24 and S24+ have increased as noted before by 3% and 10% respectively. The double-digit increases for video playback are a strong value proposition as a result of the new efficiency cores of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset.

The S23 series comes with Android 14 and the One UI 6.1. Samsung also announced a commitment of up to seven years of OS upgrades and security updates. The S24 series can be preordered as of January 17th with availability on January 31st.
