Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology Report

Advanced Monitor Market Expected to Rise 328% Y/Y - More Brands Entering the Category

In the recently released Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology Report (一部実データ付きサンプルをお送りします), some highlights for Advanced Monitors include:

  • In Q1’22, advanced monitor panel shipments grew 45% Q/Q and 219% Y/Y to 412K panels. We expect to see an increase to 625K panels in Q2’22, a 52% Q/Q increase with MiniLED models outpacing OLED models by more than a 5:1 ratio.
  • In 2022, we expect the advanced monitor category to increase 328% Y/Y to 3.6M panels with OLEDs increasing 641% Y/Y to 0.6M panels followed by MiniLEDs increasing 297% Y/Y to 3M panels. To date, Samsung, Dell and MSI have introduced and announced 34” QD-OLED monitors at very competitive price points and LG and other brands have announced 42” and 48” WOLED monitors. LG recently announced a 48” UltraGear gaming monitor to complement their 42” and 48” C2 series. We expect other brands to introduce QD-OLED and WOLED models throughout the year.
  • In 2022, for OLED monitors, we expect QD-OLED to account for a 27% share and WOLED to account for a 52% share. We expect OLED monitors to account for a 15% unit share of the advanced monitor market in 2022 vs a 9% share in 2021.
  • For MiniLEDs, we expect Apple to announce a 27” MiniLED monitor later this year that is driving significant panel shipments in 2022. Panel production for this model has begun and accounts for a 34% share of all MiniLED LCD panels for 2022. The Apple 27” MiniLED monitor is expected to have 2X the number of dimming zones and 7X more MiniLEDs versus the 32” Pro Display XDR that is priced at $4999.
  • In 2022, by brand for advanced monitors, we expect Apple to increase to a 26% unit share, up from 9% in 2021, followed by AOC at 16%, up from 12% in 2021 and Asus at 13%, down from 52% in 2021. For OLED monitors, we expect LGE to have a 43% share followed by Samsung at 11% and Asus at 9%.

  • Although the total monitor market is expected to decline 4% Y/Y in 2022 and 3% Y/Y in 2023, we see continued growth for OLED and MiniLED monitors as prices continue to fall and more products enter the market.
  • We do expect advanced monitors to increase share annually as prices fall and more products enter the marketplace, reaching more than a 7% unit share in 2026.
  • For the forecast period, both OLEDs and MiniLEDs are expected to enjoy rapid growth, with OLEDs rising at a 100% CAGR to 2.4M units and MiniLEDs rising at a 67% CAGR to 10M units from 2021 - 2026.
  • MiniLEDs are expected to continue to lead with the majority share through the forecast period. An open cell LCD panel combined with MiniLED backlights is very cost effective versus OLED. WOLED and QD-OLED are better suited for TVs and are not as bright as MiniLEDs.
  • Although future cost optimized G8.5 IGZO FMM VTE RGB OLED fabs have been delayed, we see OLED sustaining a 15% to 21% share from 2022 - 2026. RGB OLEDs using FMM VTE equipment could be the best solution for OLED monitors due to the ability to achieve higher brightness.
