2021 AMOLED Smartphone Revenue Reaches $397B - A Record 56% Unit Share for Flexible AMOLED

DSCC has released its latest Quarterly Advanced Smartphone Features Report (一部実データ付きサンプルをお送りします) and revealed its preliminary Q4’21 and 2021 AMOLED smartphone unit and revenue results.

Q3’21 and Q4’21 were very strong quarters for AMOLED smartphone panel procurements and AMOLED smartphone revenue. Q3’21 finished strong with a 22% Q/Q and 33% Y/Y increase of 163M AMOLED smartphone panels and $106B for smartphone revenue followed by Q4’21, with an 11% Q/Q increase to 180M AMOLED smartphone panels and $110B in smartphone revenue. On a panel procurement basis, we expect 2021 to achieve a total of 634M AMOLED smartphone panels, a 27% Y/Y increase and $397B for smartphone revenue, a 22% Y/Y increase.

For 2021, flexible AMOLED smartphone panels increased by 28% Y/Y to account for a 56% unit share and a 73% revenue share. This dominant share was a result of the expected Q3’21 and Q4’21 lift from Apple for the iPhone 13 series and more brands launching flexible AMOLED smartphones to focus on premium smartphones in light of chip supply shortages.

For 2021, as a result of more premium smartphones being introduced, 5G and higher refresh rates also increased to record levels. As noted in the 5G article this week, 5G worldwide deployments increased over 390% Y/Y in 2021. In 2021, we expect 5G to account for a record 67% unit share and an 81% smartphone revenue share. In 2021, 5G Sub-6 GHz is the dominant 5G network band with an 81% unit share. As a result of the Apple 13 series and other AMOLED smartphones supporting 5G mmWave + Sub-6GHz, we saw this network band increase to a 19% share.
