In a significant development in the foldable market, DSCC’s latest Monthly Flagship Smartphone Tracker showed that BOE led in Q4’23 in foldable panel shipments with Huawei leading in Q4’23 foldable panel procurement.
Samsung Display has led in foldable panel shipments in all but one quarter since it entered the foldable market in Q3’19 with Q1’21 the only exception. Similarly, Samsung Electronics has led in panel procurement each quarter since it entered the foldable market in Q3’19. However, both of their streaks as #1 in these categories ended in Q4’23.
As shown here, SDC’s share fell from 76% in Q3’23 to 36% in Q4’23, its lowest share since Q1’21. SDC’s foldable panel shipments were down 70% as it lost share at Chinese brands to BOE and Samsung’s Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 underperformed. In the case of the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, lower than expected sell-through in Q3’23 and Q4’23 has resulted in significant panel inventory growth causing panel shipments for these models to decline by nearly 80% from Q3’23 to Q4’23. In fact, we believe the inventory problem on the Z Flip 5 is such a concern that Samsung may introduce a lower priced clamshell foldable later this year in order to absorb the excess Flip 5 panels. The Z Flip series has sold well in Korea and in Asia but has struggled in other regions. The poorer than expected sell-through has caused Samsung’s Q4’23 panel procurement to fall over 70% and fell 8K panels below Huawei’s procurement with Huawei leading for the first time with a 31.0% to 30.8% unit share. Huawei’s panel procurement is surging as its Mate X5 continues to sell well and it prepares to launch its next clamshell foldable. Huawei’s foldable panel procurement jumped 122% from Q3’23 to Q4’23 to take the slight lead over Samsung. As a result of Huawei’s gains and higher volumes for certain Honor, Oppo and Vivo models, BOE saw its Q4’23 panel volume surge by 68% enabling its share to rise from 16% in Q3’23 to 42% in Q4’23, enjoying its first lead in foldable panels in over 2.5 years.

Foldable Panel Procurement Share by Brand
In looking at data through February, it does not appear that BOE will enjoy its advantage for long with SDC and Visionox both forecasted to overtake BOE in Q1’24 at this point. Visionox is expected to take some share from BOE on certain Huawei models helped by undercutting BOE on price. We also show Visionox benefiting from another new entrant into the foldable market in Q1’24, ZTE. While Samsung Display is expected to rebound to #1 in foldable panels, Huawei is expected to remain ahead of Samsung in foldable panel procurement with a wider advantage of 42% to 39% in the first two months of the year. Whether that result holds up will likely depend on the reception for the next Huawei clamshell to be launched soon.
